Haggard's research interests center on international relations
and political economy, with a focus on East Asia and Latin America.
Current Projects
He is currently conducting research on the politics of
social policy in East Asia, Latin America and Central Europe.
Perspective
Haggard can provide commentary on current developments in the
Asia-Pacific, including particularly Korea, and on the politics of
economic reform and globalization.
Publications of Note
He has written on East Asia's economic growth, the
Latin American and East Asian financial crises, democratization and
federalism. His books include Pathways from the Periphery: The Politics of
Growth in the Newly Industrializing Countries (1990); The Political
Economy of Democratic Transitions (1995, with Robert Kaufman); Developing
Nations and the Politics of Global Integration (1995); and most recently,
The Political Economy of the Asian Financial Crisis (2000) and From Silicon Valley to Singapore: Location and Competitive Advantage in the Hard Disk Drive Industry (2000).
Background Notes
Prior to joining IR/PS in 1992, he was an associate
professor in the department of government at Harvard University. Haggard
was named director of the Korea-Pacific Program in 1999. He earlier served
as director of the University of California's systemwide Institute on
Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), based at UC San Diego. B.A., M.A.
and Ph.D. in political science from University of California, Berkeley.
