Financial Support
The admissions committee evaluates applications for admission to the MPIA and Ph.D. programs without regard to financial need. IR/PS is committed to providing financial support to eligible students, subject to availability of funds.

1. Fellowships and merit-based support:
IR/PS administers a number of private and corporate fellowships and awards that are available to students. Fellowship award amounts vary and may include up to full tuition and fees and may include a living stipend. Approximately $1.2 million in fellowship support has been awarded by IR/PS to the incoming Fall 2006 MPIA class. Approximately 25% of our incoming students receive a fellowship award. There may be a suplemental application required for fellowship consideration begining with applicants for the class starting in 2007-08. Fellowship awards for newly admitted students usually begin in late February or early March.

Some external fellowship programs our students have participated in or are eligible for include (levels of participation vary by program):

  • DACOR Bacon House Foundation (web site)
  • Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program (web site)
  • Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (web site)
  • Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP web site)
  • Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship (web site)
  • Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship (web site)
  • Project 1000* (web site)
  • PPIA Fellowship** (web site)
  • Returning Peace Corps Volunteers* - IR/PS has designated $50,000 with priority consideration given to RPCVs. Award is merit-based and recipients must qualify for merit award and be in the top 25% of the incoming class.
  • San Diego Fellowship Program - There are two awards affiliated with this program: the San Diego Fellowship, and the Cota Robles Fellowship. The San Diego Fellowship is for master's degree students and the Cot Robles Fellowship is for Ph.D. students. Candidates are nominated by the IR/PS Admissions office. (web site)
  • SYLFF Fellowship

* IR/PS offers a waiver of the application fee to applicants

** IR/PS does not participate in the PPIA fellowship, though qualified candidates may be offered fellowships on a merit basis.

2. Need-based financial aid:
U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for need-based financial aid. The review process is lengthy, and all students who anticipate a need for aid should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Visit the official FAFSA web site (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov) to obtain a form and instructions on how to apply. Students should file the FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible. UCSD's Title IV code is 001317. To receive full consideration for UCSD awards, applicants must submit the FAFSA by March 2nd. Questions regarding loans and grants should be directed to UCSD Financial Aid Office located at 201 University Center, (858) 534-3807.

3. Graduate student researcher and teaching assistantships:
A limited number of IR/PS graduate student academic appointments are available to IR/PS students. Teaching assistantships, reader and grader positions are also available at various UCSD departments. Admitted students will receive information about applying to individual departments for available assistantships.
