Pac Rim Summer Seminar in U.S. Studies
Overview
The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is pleased to announce the inauguration of the Pacific Rim Summer Seminar in U.S. Studies. The Pac Rim Summer Seminar is a four-week program for scholars and non-academic professionals from Asia and Latin America who want to deepen their understanding of the United States. Taught by distinguished academic experts and non-academic practitioners, the Pac Rim Summer Seminar immerses participants in the analysis of U.S. political and economic history, the conduct of U.S. government at the national and local level, the making of U.S. economic and foreign policy, U.S. political parties and elections, and U.S. mass media. The program offers the unique opportunity for young professionals from across the Pacific Rim to learn about the United States by exchanging ideas with internationally renown faculty and with each other.

UCSD
The Pac Rim Summer Seminar is run by UCSD's Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS), which is recognized as one of the top international graduate schools in the world. The new Seminar expands and builds on the success of the Summer Seminar in U.S. Studies, which the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at UCSD has run each year since 1989. Graduates of sixteen Summer Seminars now occupy faculty positions in U.S. studies programs throughout Latin America, offering undergraduate and graduate courses on U.S.related topics. Others hold key positions in government, diplomacy, business, private research institutions, mass media, political parties, and nongovernmental organizations. Numerous graduates have continued their higher education by gaining admission to advanced-degree programs at major U.S. and European universities.

The Pac Rim Summer Seminar is taught by a faculty of experts on the United States. At UCSD, participating faculty come from the departments of Economics, Political Science, and History, as well as IR/PS. Seminar faculty also includes individuals with extensive experience in government, politics, the judiciary, and business. Core funding for the Seminar is provided by the Henry Luce Foundation, corporate and individual donations, and government entities in the United States and Mexico.

In order to promote close interaction between lecturers and participants, admission to the Seminar is limited to approximately 30 individuals. All lectures and classroom discussions are conducted in English. A limited number of scholarships are available for eligible Seminar participants. We encourage applications for a place in the 2005 Pac Rim Summer Seminar. The program offers an ideal environment in which to enhance one's understanding of the United States, as well as an opportunity to develop long-lasting collaborative relationships with counterparts from Asia and Latin America.

Application forms can be requested from IR/PS directly or they can be downloaded from the IR/PS web page. The deadline for receipt of applications is February 15, 2005.
