Before coming to IR/PS in 1999, Mark completed a master’s degree in international economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. After finishing Modern Japanese Studies at the same university, he spent a year as an exchange student in Osaka to improve his language skills.
At IR/PS, Mark's career focus was international relations with a Japan regional specialization, but he particularly used IR/PS to broaden his knowledge of Asia. He was selected for a summer internship program in Yokohama at the railroad company Sagami Tetsudoo.
After graduating from IR/PS, Mark moved back to the Netherlands. His IR/PS degree helped significantly in maintaining his Asia focus while working for the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency and, subsequently, the International Economy and Financial Institutions Department in the Ministry of Finance. He started studying for a bacehlor's degree in Law at Leiden University, and in his final two years at the Ministry of Finance, Mark worked for the Financial Markets Department, where he was mainly involved in negotiating European financial sector legislation, but participated in several financial crisis teams as well.
