IR/PS is proud to celebrate its former and current Peace Corps volunteers who have embraced the ideals of service. Volunteer service is one of the core values of UC San Diego and is one of the reasons why over 600 UC San Diego graduates have served in the Peace Corps. IR/PS and the Peace Corps share a common mission to work for greater global engagement and understanding. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers have been and continue to be exceptional contributors to IR/PS, UC San Diego, and the world.

IR/PS is proud to have over 40 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) amongst its alumni and eight RPCVs in its current student body. RPCVs who have graduated from IR/PS have gone on to find careers as Foreign Service Officers for the State Department, executives for NGOs, and leaders in the business community.

IR/PS applauds its alumni, current students and all of the UC San Diego alumni and volunteers for giving their time and energy to improve people’s lives and better our global society. Together with the Peace Corps, Project Concern International, and UC San Diego, IR/PS is committed to continuing the tradition of volunteer service into the Pacific Century.

UC San Diego, A tradition of honorable service

Call to VolunteerSince its inception in 1961, 630 UC San Diego alumni have served overseas as Peace Corps volunteers. UC San Diego is ranked 22nd nationally for large universities on the Peace Corps’ Top Colleges report. For its strong commitment to service, Washington Monthly has named UC San Diego as the best National University in 2010. UC San Diego was also named to the 2009 President’s Community Service Honor Roll for the contributions UC San Diego’s students make to local, national and global communities.

As part of the 50th Anniversary of UC San Diego, Chancellor Mary Anne Fox has created the Volunteer 50 initiative which challenges every participant to perform 50 hours of community service from between September 2010 to June 2011.
