New Student Orientation 2012

Welcome to IR/PS!

All incoming students are required to attend orientation prior to the start of the academic year. During orientation, various school and campus representatives will encourage students to make the most of the graduate experience by providing information about the campus and its resources.

Orientation also provides IR/PS students an opportunity to meet classmates, talk with faculty, receive academic advising, and complete language placement exams.

Orientation Schedule

Recommended parking locations: Hopkins Parking Structure, Pangea Parking Structure. Day permits can be purchased from machines located in each parking structure. Consult the UC San Diego Parking and Transportation site to confirm the latest parking rates and hours of operation.

A detailed Orientation schedule is forthcoming. Please save the dates for the mandatory sessions listed below.

All IR/PS Orientation activities will take place in the Robinson Auditorium, located within the IR/PS complex.

 

Tuesday, Sept 18: International Student Orientation (International Students Only)
Wednesday, Sept 19:  Office of Graduate Studies Orientation (All incoming students)

Thursday, Sept 20: IR/PS Student Affairs Orientation, Robinson Building Auditorium  
NOTE: Please eat a full breakfast - only liquid refreshments will be served in the morning!  Your official IR/PS name badge will be available at check-in.  If you already have your IR/PS name badge please wear it for orientation.
 
9:30-10:00    Registration
10:00-11:00  Welcome from Associate Dean Craig McIntosh
11:00-11:30  IR/PS Library Collections Presentation
11:30-11:45  PIASO Welcome
11:45-1:00    Lunch (provided)
1:00-2:00      Academic, Language, and Community Policies and Expectations
2:00-3:00      IR/PS Graduate Language Written Placement (Required for MPIA and BA/MIA students who need placement into IR/PS graduate level languages)
3:00-5:00      IR/PS Graduate Language Verbal Placement (By appointment only: Required for MPIA and BA/MIA students who need placement into IR/PS graduate level languages). Visit IRPSCAREERS “Events” to schedule a 20 minute appointment.
 
Friday, Sept 21: IR/PS Student Affairs Orientation, Robinson Building Auditorium  
Optional for MPIA and BA/MIA students that schedule a Friday, Language appointment in IRPSCAREERS, or for students who schedule a Friday, Computer Lab and Laptop Orientation.
 
Monday, Sept 24: IR/PS Career Services Orientation, Robinson Building Auditorium  
NOTE: Please eat a full breakfast - only liquid refreshments will be served in the morning!
 
PLEASE BRING:
  • Fully charged laptop
  • Paper copy of your resume and a pen/pencil
  • Jacket or sweater (the Auditorium can get quite cold!) and IR/PS name badge

2:30-3:30      Career Resources for International Students (for international students who didn’t attend in August)
2:30-3:30      Get a Head Start on Government Internships (for U.S. students who didn’t attend in August)
