Library Services

University of California Library
Members of the IR/PS community enjoy access to the University of California (UC) Library. The UC Library includes over one hundred libraries located throughout the ten UC campuses. Collectively, these libraries make up the largest research/academic library in the world, with over 34 million volumes in their holdings and significant digital collections.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Services
The purpose of Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is to provide support to faculty, students, and staff by borrowing materials not owned by the UC San Diego libraries. Requests may be made in person, by phone, email, or campus mail. UC San Diego faculty, students, and staff are also eligible for direct borrowing privileges at other UC campuses and at most Stanford libraries. Library Photocopy Services
As a companion to Interlibrary Loan, the library also offers photocopies of articles in journals owned at UCSD but not available electronically in full text. A small fee is charged to cover handling costs. Requests can be submitted directly from most California Digital Library databases (such as Medline, INSPEC, BIOSIS or Current Contents) using the "Request" feature. Students also may send requests via Library Express by using the "G" command in line mode or the "Request" button in the Web version, or by calling or emailing the Interlibrary Loan unit that supports their discipline.

UC San Diego Libraries

The UCSD Libraries is made up of six libraries with services and programs designed to support the academic and programmatic pursuits of the UCSD faculty, students and staff.

IR/PS Library

The IR/PS library is the first academic library in the United States dedicated to the contemporary Pacific region. Its leadership is evident in both the breadth of its holdings and the pivotal role it plays in supporting research on the region.

IR/PS library volumes and staff are located in the main Geisel Library, and are available both online and at the main library building. Contact the IR/PS subject specialists for office hours and resource information:

Class Reserves Services
Print and online library course reserves support for IR/PS classes will be handled by Geisel staff. Students will check out reserves books at the Geisel Library circulation desk.

Electronic Resources Training
The library offers group sessions and one-on-one consultations to help students make the most efficient use of all the electronic information resources available to them. These electronic resources can be used in the library and are increasingly becoming available remotely from home, lab, or office.

The library also offers many other computerized resources, from databases on compact disc which are self-service, to commercial online databases which librarians can search for UC San Diego students for a fee. Contact the reference department of the IR/PS library for more information on this service.

IR/PS Library Collection
The collection includes 109,000 volumes and 2,000 periodical subscriptions in English and the major Pacific languages, and access to more than 50 specialized on-line databases. Three collections of special note include:

The East Asia Collection (located at the IR/PS and Geisel Libraries): Collection of modern and contemporary Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) language materials in the humanities and social sciences. This includes materials in literature, history, sociology, and philosophy pertaining to the region in more than 100,000 volumes.

East Asia Digital Library: A collaborative project between UC San Diego, the California Digital Library, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and the other UC campuses. Currently, the library owns and provides the services for four Chinese and East Asian databases with 50,000 Chinese e-book titles: the largest East Asian digital collection in the nation.

Pacific Rim Digital Library Alliance: This consortium of 24 academic libraries facilitates the expansion of access to regional research materials by helping to analyze and coordinate evolving digital networks. One of the primary initiatives of the Alliance has been the digital Pacific Rim Library.

Language and Disability Resources

Skill Development Center
Students whose first language is not English and others needing assistance with writing skills are encouraged to use the Skill Development Center located in the IR/PS Computer Lab.

Students with Disabilities
Students with disabilities, including learning disabilities, should register with the UCSD Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). The OSD provides an outline of accommodations each student may request from his or her course instructors. Such arrangements must be made well in advance of examination date with the course instructor.
