The Chinese Language Film Society
The Chinese Language Film Society at UC San Diego was founded by a group of IR/PS students to highlight and take advantage of the university’s special Chinese film library. Because of outstanding Chinese film scholarship at the university and the guidance of IR/PS former head librarian Jim Cheng, the UC San Diego collection of underground Chinese films is now the largest in North America.
Charter
The Chinese Language Film Society (CLFS) is organized to screen motion pictures with the goal of increasing participants’ knowledge of Chinese speaking regions, cultures, peoples, histories, trends, and filmmaking styles for an audience of students, faculty, and staff—both Chinese experts and non-experts. To encourage maximum participation, understanding, and dialogue, films of historical or current import in any Chinese dialect will be screened with English subtitles, intertitles, or accompanying script. Post-screening, audience members are encouraged to participate in an informal roundtable discussion; when possible, with refreshments.
