Board Fellows Program

The UC San Diego Net Impact Board Fellows Program connects outstanding graduate students from UC San Diego's professional School of International Relations and Pacific Studies with the Boards of Directors of local San Diego nonprofits for apprenticeships in board service. The program offers a high-impact channel for graduate students to serve their communities by leveraging their work experience and newly acquired business knowledge in marketing, finance, and strategy. The Board Fellows Program works with participating host organizations for one academic year.

The goal of the program is to support the local community by providing it with much needed business expertise while giving graduate students leadership opportunities in their community.

As part of the Board Fellows Program, you can

•    Engage with a nonprofit on a strategic level
•    Learn about nonprofit management and governance via first hand experience
•    Gain the skills that facilitate future board service
•    Develop expertise through a hands-on project for the non-profit organization
•    Develop deeper knowledge of specific social or environmental issues
•    Partner with experienced mentors
•    Give back to your community!

Host organizations commit to providing fellows with unparalleled exposure to the challenges and rewards of service in the social sector.  In turn, your commitment to the organization’s mission, support toward a meaningful project and business training can benefit your host organization.

Expectations of Board Fellows
The Board Fellows relationship is a reciprocal one: you bring a fresh perspective to an organization and a desire to make a positive impact through a project; your host organization brings passion for its mission and deep experience in nonprofit management.

As a Board Fellow, you are expected to

•    Participate as a non-voting member in all board meetings - about 6 hours per month
•    Complete a project addressing a matter of concern to the board of directors
•    Present final results to the board, and provide a copy to our leadership team
•    Invest in the fellowship: at least 10 hours per month
•    Attend a quarterly meeting with the NBLP team and complete an evaluation at the end of the year

Expectations of Host Organizations
Net Impact Board Fellows Program presents UC San Diego graduate students with an opportunity to learn about board governance in a hands-on environment, observing and participating in real-world decision-making faced by nonprofits in today’s changing social sector.

To help fulfill these goals, we ask all host organizations to commit to the following:
•    Involve the Board Fellow in all board of director meetings
•    Identify a board member to serve as a mentor and establish a mentoring framework
•    Fimiliarize with the Board Fellow the scope and timeline of a board project
•    Complete a post-fellowship review and provide ongoing feedback to the Board Fellows Program team

For questions about participating in the program, we encourage both interested students and nonprofit organizations to contact our directors Nana Lei or Claire Springer.
