Political Analysis and Strategy Simulations (PASS)

PASS is a student-run organization designed to provide professional development experience for IR/PS students in the fields of political & policy analysis. PASS presents or co-sponsors three political crisis simulations per year that cover a variety of salient topics in international affairs. In PASS Simulations, IR/PS students use their skills in negotiation, analysis, and strategy to understand how high-level foreign policy decisions are made.

Location: University of California, San Diego, School of International Relations & Pacific Studies, Robinson Auditorium

2011 Symposium Frequently Asked Questions:

•    What will we be doing in the symposium? Participants will be broken down into teams representing country- level actors. These teams will be presented with a political crisis scenario and asked to negotiate policy outcomes and manage the crisis in line with national goals.
•    What is the goal of the symposium? The goal of the symposium is to bring together a diverse group of participants from different schools to enhance our understandings of political crisis situations and how policy makers make decisions under difficult domestic and international constraints.
•    How is a winner determined? As the goal of this exercise is to enhance our learning and capabilities, there will be no “winner.”
•    What is the cost to attend? Participation in the symposium is FREE. Lunch will be provided at no cost, thanks to a generous donation from the IR/PS Center on Pacific and Emerging Economies.
•    How do I prepare for the symposium? Participants are not expected to be an expert in any one field, and prior knowledge of the topic of the simulation is not required. We will provide participants with a background brief and some information prior to the symposium.
