Created in 1987, the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (Sylff) program was designed to support graduate students studying in the humanities and social sciences fields at 69 universities in 44 countries. To date, more than 12,000 Sylff Fellows worldwide, of which 56 are IR/PS alumni, have received funding to pursue their studies.

History

The aim of the Sylff program is to globally identify and nurture leaders who will overcome differences such as nationality, language, ethnicity, religion, and political systems to tackle global issues, and whose high integrity and drive to address issues unique to their respective countries can make a real difference.

In 1991, IR/PS received a $1 million dollar endowment to create the Sylff program at UC San Diego to support the education of outstanding IR/PS students pursuing their graduate studies with high potential for global leadership.

The program is inspired by the vision of the late Ryoichi Sasakawa, philanthropist and founding chairman of The Nippon Foundation, that “the world is one family and all mankind are brothers and sisters.” Today it is a collaborative initiative of The Nippon Foundation, the endowment donor, and The Tokyo Foundation. As with its founding at the School, Professor Takeo Hoshi continues to serve as our chairperson at IR/PS.

Sylff Today

IR/PS commemorated 20 years of supporting Sylff Fellows on May 26, 2011 in conjunction with events celebrating 50 years of UC San Diego historic milestones, remarkable achievements, and innovative firsts since the university’s founding in 1960.
