The University of California, San Diego celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2010. This was a time to honor our founders and the people who shaped this university and their historic achievements. Volunteer50
UC San Diego community members were challenged by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox to perform 50 hours of community service during the university's 50th Anniversary celebration. The volunteer challenge lasted 10 months, from the launch of the anniversary celebration in September 2010 to the close in June 2011.
Volunteers registered for the challenge, then searched for volunteer opportunities and tracked their service. Each month a service theme was featured, also showcasing five local All-Star community organizations that fit the month’s theme. Volunteers performed their service anywhere, and incentives were offered for individuals and groups who reached a high level of service. Click here to learn more.
Peace Corps
As part of the 50th Anniversary of both UC San Diego and the Peace Corps, IR/PS is proud to have celebrated its former and current Peace Corps volunteers who have embraced the ideals of service. IR/PS has more than 40 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) among its alumni and eight RPCVs in its current student body. Click here to read more about IR/PS and Peace Corps.

11/12: Alumnus Danny Paz and Long Way Home, among 12 finalists in the BBC/Newsweek World Challenge 2010
IR/PS is proud to support alumnus Danny Paz '06, the Director of International Communications for Long Way Home, an NGO started by a former Peace Corps worker to break the cycle of poverty among youth in developing communities by creating educational opportunities, cultivating civic interaction, and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
10/2: A Night in Napa
Alumni joined Dean Cowhey and members of IR/PS faculty at the Castello di Amorosa Castle and Winery.
9/26: UC San Diego Day at the Padres
Chancellor Fox threw out the first pitch in a special ceremony with the Padres to honor the university's 50th anniversary.
