Message From Dean Peter Cowhey

Peter Cowhey My service in the Obama Administration has reinforced my conviction that, clearly, the "future" is here. The "Pacific Century" will be driven by the dynamics of the societies and governments stretching from the Americas to the South Asian sub-continent.

The University of California created the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) at UC San Diego in order to provide a unique resource for training leaders, creating ideas, and building networks for the Pacific Century. The School is internationally renowned for its innovative programs, superb faculty, and outstanding students. It now stands among the world's top graduate schools of international relations, and is the established leader in its focus on Asia and the Americas. We are also part of a larger success story.

UC San Diego is now fifty years old, has many Nobel Prize laureates, and has among the highest ranked departments in the world in both the social and natural sciences. Both our political science and economics groups are among the top ten in the country. We have the sixth largest research and development budget among American universities.

I invite you to look at the work of our research centers to get a glimpse of the range and depth of work performed by our faculty that infuses your experience at IR/PS.

Our curriculum at IR/PS blends a mix of three professional school traditions--schools of international relations, public policy, and management. Our classes are small and stress team interaction. Our interdisciplinary yet integrated curriculum prepares students to perform with distinction in senior policy positions in the public and nonprofit sectors as well as in the top management of multinational firms and financial institutions. A vigorous internship and career services program opens opportunities for our graduates around the world.

International Advisory Board

IRPS International Advisory Board To aid the Dean in achieving the vision and mission of IR/PS, the International Advisory Board (IAB) was formed in 1986 and continues to be a driving force in the growth and success of IR/PS. Members of the IAB provide counsel on current issues that affect the School's role as an established leader for international affairs and international management education focused on the Pacific region. IAB involvement and support continues to help IR/PS change the world globally.
