Endowed Chairs

Recruiting and Retaining the Best

Faculty members at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies are internationally renowned in many sectors for their expertise on the Pacific, and are widely recognized for their boldness, innovation, and enthusiasm for teaching. In this era of reduced government funding, however, we are dependent on private support to sustain the high quality of our faculty. While the university pays for the salary of a faculty member appointed to an endowed chair, it is the permanent endowed fund created by philanthropic gifts that provides perpetual annual income in support of the teaching and research activities of the person holding the chair.

By increasing the number of endowed chairs, we will be better able to support our stellar scholars, enhancing and expanding their teaching and research activities. Endowed positions also help ensure that we are able to attract the best and brightest faculty, and continue to encourage the important research and teaching that benefits society.

Named endowed faculty chairs may be created with gifts or pledges of $500,000 or more.  For more information on making a gift to the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, contact Ivan Shin at (858) 822-7617, or email at iishin@ucsd.edu.
