IR/PS Faculty Handbook SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION AND ADMINISTRATION This handbook is designed to serve as an informational resource to faculty members at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS). The handbook provides an overview of faculty services at IR/PS and UCSD, as well as information on UC systemwide policies that apply to faculty members. Additional information is contained in the IR/PS Graduate Programs Catalog (available at: http://www-irps.ucsd.edu/irps/catalog/catalog.html), on the UCSD web site at: http://www.ucsd.edu/faculty.html, and in the Faculty Handbook published by the Office of the President (http://www.ucop.edu/acadadv/acadpers/handbook/welcome.html). In the event of any difference between the policies outlined in this handbook (which is updated on an annual basis) and the policies cited on official University web sites, University policy takes precedence. UNIVERSITY GOVERNANCE At UCSD, all departments, units, and programs are assigned to a particular Vice Chancellorial area. The Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, as well as all academic departments, fall under Academic Affairs. The Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs (SVCAA) is Dr. Marsha A. Chandler. An organization chart for the Office of the SVCAA is available at: http://adminrecords.ucsd.edu/PPM/docs/10-0.1.HTML. The SVCAA reports to the Chancellor of UCSD. IR/PS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES AND STAFF A detailed list of staff responsibilities and contact information is available online at: http://www-irps.ucsd.edu/irps/administration/whom1.html. Offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Each year, the Dean appoints faculty members to serve on IR/PS committees. In addition to service on school committees, faculty members may be appointed to serve on campus-wide committees. Faculty members are expected to serve on at least one academic review ad hoc committee, if asked, and to respond to the Senior Vice Chancellor in writing, if necessary, to decline such service. Please see the Dean's Executive Assistant for an up-to-date late of faculty committees and appointees for the 2003-04 academic year. The International Advisory Board (IAB) assists the Dean and faculty of
IR/PS in identifying trends that will influence the role of IR/PS as a
leading professional school, research center, and community resource.
The IAB makes an important contribution to IR/PS by identifying internship
and career opportunities for IR/PS students, enhancing financial support,
and raising public and international visibility of the School. IAB members
include prominent and distinguished leaders from the public and private
sectors who are active in international affairs.
