The Rising: How Will Japan Recover from the Disaster?

imageSix weeks after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, UC San Diego's IR/PS hosted a town hall meeting to discuss possible future trajectories of post-Earthquake Japan.

Cities, ports, and roads were destroyed, and the death toll surpassed 28,000. Hundreds of thousands of people went without a home. Supply chains, distribution channels, and transportation lines were interrupted in numerous places, and this affected economic activities all around the world. Even six weeks after the earthquake, strong aftershocks continued. Even starting May 2011, we saw signs of recovery: factories reopened and roads and houses were being rebuilt. In this town hall meeting, we gave updates on the political, economic, and social situation and discussed possible future trajectories of post-Earthquake Japan.
