Chinese students from Shanghai topped the world in reading, math, and sciences in the last round of PISA, the largest international academic assessment of 15 year olds. While the outside observers showed tremendous admiration, the Chinese on the mainland did not hold a big party to celebrate this outstanding achievement. Why? While Western countries have been working hard to "surpass Shanghai," China has taken serious action to change its education system to be more like the U.S.

In this presentation, Dr. Yong Zhao will explore two paradigms of education, and challenge the traditional views of education quality. The presentation is based on his two most recent books Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization (ASCD, 2009) and World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students (Corwin, 2012).
