Within days of Mr. Pachauri's election as IPCC leader, Mr. Gore assailed him in a New York Times op-ed piece. The former vice president cited the Bush administration's backing of Mr. Pachauri as a reason for concern. A spokeswoman for Mr. Gore said he wouldn't comment. Mr. Pachauri said the two are now good friends. Mr. Gore had reason to soften on Mr. Pachauri. He became "an advocate for emissions controls that are a lot more radical than he was talking about or almost anyone was talking about 10 years ago," said David Victor, an international-energy expert at the University of California, San Diego.
