Not long ago, the Cold War seemed to be — like the Berlin Wall — a historical curiosity. But that dangerous conflict between capitalist and communist systems is on display on the Korean peninsula, where tensions between the democratic South Korea and the Stalinist North Korea are rising.

Leon “Bud” Edney is a former Vice Chief of Naval Operations. After retiring in 1992, the admiral was named Distinguished Professor of Leadership at the United States Naval Academy. He lives in Coronado.
Stephan Haggard is the Lawrence and Sallye Krause Professor of Korea-Pacific Studies at the University of California San Diego, and director of UCSD’s Korea-Pacific Program. He lives in San Diego.
