SAN DIEGO – April 6, 2010 – A Department of Education grant will support two students from UC San Diego’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IRPS) in a six month internship with CB Richard Ellis’ Carbon Services Division.

UCSD graduate students Jarrod Russell and Anne Shiraishi will work directly with Matt Ellis, CBRE Carbon Services Director and a UCSD alumnus, as part of two three-month stints analyzing global carbon markets as they relate to the commercial real estate sector.

“As a leader in sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction programs, this is a great opportunity for CBRE to leverage the government grant to expand our market coverage. As a UCSD alumnus, I’m thrilled to work with world class talent at my alma mater,” Ellis said.

“Our program emphasizes the global roles of policy and business, so the chance to help build CBRE’s carbon program within a dynamic market like Brazil will be absolutely priceless professional development,” added graduate student Shiraishi.

The internship will place the students in San Diego for the first three months, and in CBRE’s Sao Paolo office for the second stint.

“We selected Sao Paolo because Brazil is an ideal location from which we can look at carbon markets, particularly forestry and Clean Development Mechanism markets,” Ellis said.

From UCSD’s perspective, providing students experience with a Fortune 500 company and market leader like CBRE is a top priority in any circumstance.

“To work with a firm on the cutting edge of such an important and rapidly growing market is the best possible outcome,” said David Robertson, Director of Career Services for IRPS.

UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography is recognized internationally for its climate science and UCSD has been an early adopter and advocate of sustainability technologies like renewable energy, green building and electric and hybrid transportation. CB Richard Ellis Press Release

“Universities create the future through discovery, education and example. This internship is an excellent example of putting our knowledge and education to work through partnerships with the private sector. Sustainable change needs to be knowledge-driven, and this project will give our students the chance to contribute to practical, science-based solutions,” said Dr. Lisa Shaffer, one of the founders of UCSD’s Sustainability Solutions Institute.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 17 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions come from commercial real estate. The agency has recently listed carbon dioxide as a pubic health hazard and is moving to regulate carbon dioxide in absence of federal carbon legislation.

“We have an obligation to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in our industry,” Ellis said. “I see that 17 percent number as a metric of opportunity as much as responsibility.”
