Susan Shirk, a former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific affairs, on Wednesday said Japan and the United States should create a multilateral regional security framework in East Asia to cope with the rise of China, which includes China itself.
Shirk, a professor at the University of California, San Diego, who served in the administration of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, spoke as a panelist at the opening session of the Yomiuri International Forum 2010 titled "The Japan-U.S. Alliance and East Asia" held in Tokyo.
