Students Take the Lead
06/03/2009
Mira Mendoza,

Despite their intense academic requirements this spring, our students and student-run organizations found time for extracurricular events that enrich not only IR/PS but the San Diego community as well. Students deserve credit for events such as a public lecture on the current politics in Taiwan, a public talk on the democratization of Iraq and China, the “Beyond Good Intentions” film screening, and an alumna talk on food distribution in North Korea sponsored by Mannam given by Yeri Kim ’06.
Alex Cree '09 receives credit for organizing a public lecture by Daniel Lynch, Professor of International Relations from University of Southern California. Professor Lynch recently spent a week in residency at the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and addressed the questions; What has actually changed in Taiwan that is of political, cultural, and international significance, and what has actually stayed the same?; How much of Taiwan's posture and position in the world is situationally dictated and how much is determined by which party or faction or individual holds office?

The screening of the documentary film series Beyond Good Intentions with a talk given by Tori Hogan was organized by Annie Schowalter '10 and Natasha Hanshaw '10. The film series follows the round-the-world journey of first-time filmmaker, Tori Hogan. Shot on location in eight different countries, the ten-episode series took viewers along for the ride as Tori met with countless aid workers and recipients to uncover more innovative approaches to helping communities in need. To learn more and view the first short film in the series, visit the Beyond Good Intentions website. ?? |
