Student Groups Welcome the Class of 2010 and Focus on Sustainability

10/01/2008
Elaine Fleming,

Throughout the first week of classes, IR/PS student group leaders held a series of events to welcome the new students, introduce our IR/PS organizations, and promote involvement.  Events started in the IR/PS courtyard with a professional group faire held by Export Access, Strategic Community Consulting, and Journal of International Policy Solutions (JIPS).

The Sustainability Rally was held the following afternoon with Net Impact, Environmental Society, and the Development Club.  In addition to information, all students were given travel mugs as a gift from Dean Cowhey and some student received cloth bags in an effort to reduce the use of plastic bags. In return, students pledged to bring these mugs, IR/PS water bottles, and bags to school events in an effort to reduce the consumption of paper, plastic cups, and bags. Finally, an information table was set up to educate students on how they can easily reduce waste and energy.

The week of activities ended on Thursday evening with a Regional Desserts from Around the World reception hosted by Asameshikai, China Focus, Latin America Student Organization (LASO), Mannam, and Southeast Asia Link (SEAL). While students shared food and information in the lounge, the vice presidential debate was broadcast in a nearby classroom. To liven up the debates, one facilitated a game of “Palin Bingo” complete with handouts and prizes.
