Orientation 2008: Academic Year Kick Off

09/26/2008
Elaine Fleming,

The class of 2010 began their graduate careers with an in-depth orientation program. The program began with three days of seminars with topics including: academic policy, campus employment, fellowships, research technology, and education abroad opportunities. After the overview of campus life, the students then headed into a career management orientation that focused on getting the job they want after graduation.

After their intense training, the incoming students had the opportunity to meet with faculty and continuing students. On Wednesday, September 24, Professors Peter Gourevitch, Lawrence Krause, Bruce Lehmann and Barry Naughton participated in a panel discussion on “The Global Financial Crisis:  How Did It Happen?  How Do We Exit?”  The discussion was moderated by Professor Miles Kahler and attended by over one hundred students, faculty, and members of the community.  Parts of the discussion were aired on KUSI News later that evening.

On Friday, September 26, the second year students participated in the first “Continuing Student Orientation.”  Students attended one of two meetings regarding Student Affairs, Career Services and Computer Lab services and procedures.  These meeting were followed by meetings organized by faculty advisors, regional concentration meetings, and career tracks.  The night culminated in the Dean’s Reception, which was held in the Institute of the Americas and attended by more than 200 students, staff, faculty and alumni.
