20th Class Graduates

With Commencement Day record high temperatures and not a cloud in the sky, 76 of the 100 members of the Class of 2008 crossed the stage to become IR/PS' 20th graduating class. Irwin Jacobs, co-founder and chairman of the board of directors of Qualcomm, Incorporated delivered the Commencement Address, Michael Price, MPIA 2008, delivered the Class Commencement Address, and Chancellor Marye Anne Fox conferred the degrees.

2008 award recipients were introduced by Dean Peter Cowhey:

Jennifer Lee & Joyce Lawrence - Allison Award for the highest grade point average in the graduating class

Jason Thomas Riley - Wyman Award for leadership, public service, and international understanding

Joyce Lawrence (Spanish) & Zih-Shan Peng (Japanese) - Language Achievement Award for outstanding achievement in language study

John Kucharski - The Joseph Grunwald Award  for significant contributions in the promotion
of inter-American understanding

Kathleen Rigney - The New Econometrics Prize for the student with the best empirical paper

2008 Awards were presented at the previous evening's IR/PS Awards Night reception where students, their families, faculty, alumni, and staff gathered to celebrate at the UC San Diego Faculty Club.

Craig McIntosh was awarded the PIASO Faculty Recognition Award for Teaching Excellence by Jason Riley, MPIA 2008, PIASO president. In Professor McIntosh's absence, Jason delivered his acceptance speech.
