IR/PS Serves a Vital Role in Pre-Deployment Training for USMC Officers

Elaine Fleming,

The Global Leadership Institute (GLI) is entering its third year providing graduate-level executive training for Marine Officers. IR/PS professors offer valuable insight into strategies pertaining to salient geo-political, economic, security, and human concerns in the Asia-Pacific.

In 2006, GLI embarked on a program that was the result of missteps taken by the military in the Middle East pertaining to battalions going into regions without a complete understanding of its geo-political, economic, security, and human dynamics. These errors ultimately resulted in unfortunate friction and fatalities. Following GLI’s December 2007 program that received extensive media coverage, Lt. Col. Christian Wortman, 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, indicated in an interview with the LA Times, “Not so long ago, there was a tendency to look at an infantry battalion as a blunt instrument. Those days are over. … It’s going to take a mature Marine, an educated Marine, a thoughtful individual in the future.”
