Camp Pendleton Marines at IR/PS

Marines learn from faculty, experts on the Pacific region

Elaine Fleming,

For about three dozen Marines, the all-day seminar on December 6 at IR/PS' Robinson Auditorium was a chance to gain some insight into the issues that drive the countries of the Pacific before their deployment to the region after the holidays. IR/PS Professors Peter Gourevitch, Ellis Krauss, Susan Shirk, Edmund Malesky, Stephan Haggard, and Barbara Walter each presented on their areas of expertise and fielded questions from the Marines in attendance.

The program is one in a continuing series organized by IR/PS's Global Leadership Institute (GLI), IR/PS' Executive Education program, under the direction of Darla Wilson.

Also attending the sessions were members of the local media. Mark Walker of the North County Times writes about the specific political and security issues discussed during the session in  "Marines study Pacific Rim in advance of January deployment."

In his Los Angeles Times story, "Marines and academics join over foreign relations," Tony Perry looks at the questions and concerns of the Marines in attendance.
