IR/PS Scholar Reports on Disconnect Between Internet Traffic and Communications Infrastructure
08/28/2007

Michael Kleeman, a senior fellow at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), has released a report on the growing disconnect between Internet infrastructure and the rapid growth of multimedia and mobile Internet-based traffic.
According to the report, traditional Internet architecture was not designed to handle today’s traffic. For example, the most popular YouTube video download as of July 2007 was “Evolution of Dance”, a six minute video added in 2006, which had over 52 million downloads. This one video generated traffic roughly equivalent to a month of data network traffic in 2000. There have also been changes in the types of traffic and the quality of service (QoS) that this traffic requires, and where the traffic is originating and going to, each contributing to the disconnect.
The full text of the report is available on the CPE web site.
The report outlines the challenges this traffic presents for networks and the solutions, including investments in new capacity and technology required. According to the report unless an adequate supply of quality bandwidth at reasonable prices is ensured, current and future business models will be stranded, which will have serious implications for economic growth and national competitiveness in the Internet sector.
Michael Kleeman is a senior fellow at UC San Diego and National Chair of Strategy for the American Red Cross. The report is based on a larger study underwritten by AT&T, which will be completed later in the year.
Established in 1986, UCSD's Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) is the premiere and only U.S. professional school offering business-savvy training with a focus on policy, economics and technology in the Pacific Rim. IR/PS is shaping the Pacific Century by training its leaders, creating ideas and supporting networks to build a Pacific community.
