Dean Peter Cowhey serves on panel to select recipients of Qualcomm

03/02/2007

As part of a new initiative, a panel of experts participated in the selection of recipients of Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach BREW Application Funding, a USD 1 million fund designed to increase the availability of useful wireless applications worldwide. This year associate vice chancellor for international affairs at UC San Diego, and dean of IR/PS, Professor Peter Cowhey served on that panel composed of three global telecommunications and economic development experts.

BREW grants are awarded to the most innovative proposals for a BREW public service application in one of five areas: healthcare, education, public safety, governance and the environment. The grand prize of $100,000 was awarded to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) of India. The winning application development team will demonstrate how Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks can help provide specific and useful advice to farmers and spread the benefits of technology deep into rural India at an affordable cost. CDMA provides enhanced capacity for voice and data communications, allowing a greater number of subscribers to connect at any given time.

Other proposals awarded BREW funding this year include applications to assist visually impaired persons in communication, to use game-like learning on cell phones to improve literacy and an application to combat Avian influenza.
