Sempra Energy Environmental Speaker Series at IR/PS will explore climate change and environmental stability
02/26/2007

Should the U.S. wait for action on the Kyoto Protocol until China agrees to join? What should be the strategy for China and America in dealing with the issues of climate change? Former EPA Administrator William Reilly will discuss "China, America and the Climate Change” in his lecture at UC San Diego, on Feb 28. Reilly inaugurates a new series of lectures on environmental policy organized by the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) with the support of a $20,000 gift from Sempra Energy.
In announcing the first speaker of the series, Associate Vice Chancellor for International Affairs and IR/PS Dean Peter Cowhey says, “Sempra Energy is partnering with IR/PS to bring speakers to our community engaged in issues surrounding environmental policy. We want our speakers to share the best thinking on the issues and a sure grasp of the complexities of designing and implementing policy. We are very pleased that the first speaker will be Reilly, a leader who has won bipartisan respect.”
Cowhey further remarks, “The new Sempra Energy series is a natural compliment to the IR/PS International Environmental Policy career track. This track examines economics, political science, management science, and international law policy and contentious environmental challenges that managers, analysts, and advocates in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors face.”
"As global warming, climate change and other environmental topics become increasingly important public policy issues, we believe that it is essential that all the stakeholders engage in informed discussions about how best to address these critical challenges," said Javade Chaudhri, executive vice president, general counsel and chief environmental officer of Sempra Energy. "We are pleased to underwrite this program at such a renowned institution as UCSD and look forward to the participation of researchers, business leaders, students, policymakers and some of the world’s most well-known environmentalists."
Reilly is a senior advisor to TPG, an international investment partnership, and was a founding partner of Aqua International Partners, a private equity fund dedicated to investing in companies engaged in water and renewable energy. He has also served as the first Payne Visiting Professor at Stanford University, president and chairman emeritus of the World Wildlife Fund, president of the Conservation Foundation, and director of the Rockefeller Task Force on Land Use and Urban Growth. He was head of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. Earth Summit in 1992. Reilly is chair of the San Francisco Mayor’s Clean Tech Advisory Council and a director of the National Geographic Society Education Foundation.
