The Recondite Recount. Andrés Manuel López Obrador launched his case against alleged electoral fraud in a scattershot attempt – in the streets, the media, and the courts – to find any chink in the armor surrounding the apparent victory by Felipe Calderón. The Federal Electoral Tribunal was so overwhelmed this week that it had to install an additional 21 tables in the lobby to handle election challenges. In theory, the charges lodged by the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) could convince the tribunal to annul the election the way it has annulled several state elections – but don’t hold your breath waiting for that. The PRD’s main case for a vote-by-vote recount was accepted for a hearing by the electoral tribunal. A growing number of voices are calling for a recount, many only as a measure to get AMLO to admit defeat and go home. But no matter how loud the chorus grows, the tribunal is unlikely to accede to a full recount, so PRD-led marches of hundreds of thousands of supporters are bound to continue.
