UCSD Holds Commencements June 17, 18, 19

Six undergraduate and two graduate commencement ceremonies will be held on the La Jolla campus of the University of California, San Diego at various times June 17, 18 and 19. More than 5,000 students and 48,000 guests are expected to be on hand for the rites.

Both notable guests and students will appear as commencement speakers. They include:

Former State Senator Dede Alpert (D-San Diego), whose public service has centered on California’s school system, will be commencement speaker at 8:30 a.m. ceremonies June 17 on RIMAC Field, during which 900 graduates of Thurgood Marshall College will receive their degrees. The student speaker will be Spencer Ely Westcott of Penn Valley, Ca.

At 10 a.m. June 17, Jonathan Karl, ABC News national security correspondent, will address 125 graduates of the Graduate School of International Relations/Pacific Studies, on his work covering the Pentagon, intelligence agencies and the State Department. Karl has reported more extensively on the situation in Darfur, Sudan than any other network correspondent, visiting Sudan three times in 2005. The graduation will be held at the Institute of the Americas.

Later on June 17, at 3 p.m., Muir College will hold ceremonies for 900 graduates on the RIMAC Field. Student speaker Natasha Wilder of Los Gatos, Ca., will represent her class.

The largest of UCSD’s commencement classes, 1,250 graduates of Earl Warren College, will start off Sunday, June18 with 8:30 a.m. ceremonies on RIMAC Field. The student speaker will be Emily Kristi Min of San Diego, a biochemistry and cell biology major.

Sixth College will graduate, in effect, its inaugural class, since its first graduation last year saw only eight students--who had completed their studies in three years-- receive their diplomas. The ceremony for 190 graduates on RIMAC Field at 10 a.m. June 18 will feature John Marino, Ph.D., UCSD history professor and a founding member of the Sixth College Culture, Art and Technology Core Curriculum. The student speaker will be Katherine Ellen Eifert.

The Graduate Division will award 275 post graduates their degrees during 2 p.m. ceremonies June 18 in RIMAC Arena. UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox will be the commencement speaker.

A total 850 graduates from Revelle College will mark commencement at 2:30 p.m. June 18 on RIMAC field. Tom Bond, former Revelle provost who headed the college when this class entered four years ago, will be guest speaker. Student speakers are Ben Wang of Belmont, Ca. and Rachel Corell of Northridge, Ca.

For the first time at UCSD, a Monday commencement is scheduled, when an estimated 800 graduates of Eleanor Roosevelt College will receive their degrees at ceremonies to be held at 10 a.m. June 19 on RIMAC Field. Mike Farrell, known as B.J. Hunnicutt on the MASH television series and a human rights activist for more than 30 years, will be the guest speaker. Jerome McBrearty of Pacific Palisades, an aeronautical engineering major, will be the student speaker.
