Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of USAID spoke at Columbia Business School on the growth of the development community and USAID's changing role in development. Dr. Shah also unveiled USAID's Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) fund. Professor Eli Berman's team was selected as one of the initial venture partners for their work using cell phone monitoring technology to innovate in the democracy and government sector.

Eli Berman is an associate professor of economics at UC San Diego and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is also currently Research Director for International Security Studies at the Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC).
His research interests include economic development and conflict, the economics of religion, labor economics, technological change, economic demography, and applied econometrics.
