Chalmers Johnson, a former CIA consultant, prolific author and professor emeritus at UC San Diego’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, died Saturday at his Cardiff home. He was 79 and had been in ill health for several years.
A respected and controversial scholar on Japan, Dr. Johnson became known for his book criticizing American foreign policy before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Published in 2000, “Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire” warned that the country was ripe for retaliation. After Sept. 11, the book was viewed as prescient and became a best-seller.
