The GSMA is pleased to announce that today it has appointed Sebastián Martín Cabello as the Director of its regional office in Latin America. He will be responsible of representing and leading GSMA activities in the Latin America region.
“Sebastián has been a great asset to the GSMA’s global activities in the public policy area in developing markets and is both well known and well regarded in Latin America as he has worked with telecom industry members and regulators across the region,” said Tom Philips, Chief Government and Regulatory Affairs Officer, GSMA. “Sebastián has worked hard to promote spectrum release for mobile broadband development and has positioned himself in a unique way to become a key contributor to stimulate the public-private dialogue and to drive common industry initiatives for the good of consumers.”
“Today there are more than 550 million mobile connections in Latin America and the Caribbean, and it is important for the Latin American communications industry to be working closely with governments and inter-governmental institutions to enhance communication services and development in the region,” said Cabello. “We have the fastest quarterly growth rate of all regions with 180% year on year, and together we must ensure that consumer expectations are met.”
Sebastián Cabello has been working at the GSMA since 2006 on issues related to mobile broadband and spectrum in developing countries, and has been based in Latin America. Prior to joining the GSMA, Sebastián worked as a consultant, in private, public as well as international organisations including Organisation of American States (OAS). He holds a masters degree from the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with a specialization in International Economics and a Licenciado degree in Economics from Universidad Nacional del Sur (Argentina). He is also involved in academic activities as a professor at the Universidad de Palermo (Argentina) and associate researcher at the Centre of Technology and Society (CeTyS) of the Universidad de San Andres (Argentina). In 2003, he was honoured with a Fulbright Grant.
