Some of Mexico’s brightest lights will be on the University of California San Diego campus Thursday for a day-long symposium aimed at drawing attention to the country’s potential in a diversity of fields, from business to the environment to the arts.

Among the speakers are a chef, a sculptor, a botanist, a philanthropist and a corporate executive.

“We want to think and talk and express Mexico in a very different voice,” said Alberto Díaz-Cayeros, director of the university’s Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, which organized the event. “These are men and women who are remarkable in their respective fields. They have visions about what they think the country could look like.”

By inviting 12 high-achieving Mexicans, the university aims to focus on the country’s aspirations as it confronts daunting challenges with drug-related violence and a struggling economy.
