David An, MPIA '07, Awarded State Department Superior Honor Award

IR/PS alumnus David T. An, MPIA '07, has been awarded the State Department Superior Honor Award, the Department’s highest civilian honor. This award is granted in recognition of extraordinary service or performance, and was awarded for his work establishing an annual visit by Taiwanese military and government officials to the U.S. to meet their U.S. counterparts from the State Department, Department of Defense, and White House National Security Council. Mr. An has also been decorated by Taiwan Defense Minister Kao Hua-Chu for his work coordinating U.S. relief efforts to Taiwan in the wake of Hurricane Morakot and participating in the Taiwanese military’s relief efforts in the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake.

While Mr. An’s State Department work is centered around Taiwan, he is also actively engaged in wider U.S.-Asian diplomacy, including work on China, South Korea, Japan, and Australia. He is currently a diplomat working at the State Department Political Military Bureau, Office of Regional Security and Arms Transfers, and specializes in East Asian and Pacific security issues.

In addition to his public service work, Mr. An is a Ph.D. candidate in political science at George Washington University, where he studies global and regional power dynamics.
