05/13/2011
Peter Cowhey,
IR/PS Dean

Diplomat. Member of Congress. Political Leader. Business executive. Ambassador Robert Ellsworth was one of the most experienced players in American foreign and security policy in the last 50 years. His experience spanned World War II, the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the opening of China, and the crisis in the Middle East.
Ambassador Ellsworth's career spanned both public policy and business. Most recently, Robert was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Advisory Board of the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, University of California, San Diego (IR/PS). He was actively involved in the IR/PS community. Just last year, he keynoted a discussion at IR/PS on what the Atlantic experience in the 20th Century can teach us about U.S.-China relations.
Ambassador Ellsworth spoke with authority, yet humility, about world affairs and strategic military policy. His passion was the importance of history in understanding foreign policy.
