North Korea and its main ally China will have to bolster supervision of their economic cooperation in order to strengthen cross-border interaction, an expert said Thursday.
The assessment by Stephan Haggard, a professor of international relations at the University of California, San Diego came after he and others conducted a survey of 300 Chinese enterprises dealing with the North.
It found that while many of the firms said they were able to make a profit, they suffered from lack of infrastructure and received little such support from Beijing.
“If firms that are making money in the country nonetheless have very negative views, then the bad policy environment is continuing to deter even more trade and investment from occurring,” Haggard said in an email.
