Alan Elliott, a student at the University of California, San Diego, School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, took time out from his master's degree studies to pursue a 10-week internship in ChildFund's Sri Lankan office this summer.

"What initially drew me to ChildFund was the premium that the organization places on local solutions, as well as long-term commitments," he said. "My day-to-day tasks consisted of learning about the specific faces and root causes of poverty in each area." Elliott identified and compiled success stories from each of his local visits.

"On my first visit, to Postholamulla School, I was shocked at the amazing contrast between conditions before ChildFund arrived and the situation afterward," he reported. At Postholamulla School in Kirinda, Hambantota, he saw an information technology lab with only 10 computers offering just 40 minutes of class time per week for 11th-grade students trying to pass their "Ordinary Level" exams, which are a graduation requirement and prerequisite for employment later in life.
