CONNECT's Washington D.C. Office recently hosted CONNECT Innovation Institute scholars as they released four groundbreaking reports on the importance of American manufacturing for America's innovation ecosystem. The reports were presented in conjunction with the Brookings Institute at a public event entitled, "Why—and Which—Manufacturing Matters: Innovation and Production in the U.S." The event was standing-room only with over 300 D.C. stakeholders in attendance including representatives from the Obama Administration, research universities, and trade associations.

While the U.S. maintains its competitive edge in novel innovation—new product innovation—global competitors have closed America's edge in a second but still important realm of innovation—process and incremental product innovation. "A strategy for manufacturing products and production innovation must recognize the growing interdependence of services and manufacturing in the new global landscape. Such a strategy will necessarily focus on manufacturing models, financing and workforce development," said Peter Cowhey, Chair of the CONNECT Innovation Institute and Dean of UC San Diego Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies.
