U.S.-Latin America Summit's Winner: Columbia

President Barack Obama and leaders of 30 Latin American countries met here Saturday for a summit titled "Connecting the Americas," but there is such a political disconnect between Washington and its southern neighbors that top officials anticipate that there will be no joint declaration at the end of the two-day meeting.
Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin, who is coordinating the summit's diplomatic discussions, told me that no consensus could be reached on two basic Latin American demands: that Cuba be allowed to participate in future U.S.-Latin American summits, and that the presidents final statement include a paragraph of support for Argentina's claims on the British-held Falkland/Malvinas Islands. The United States opposed both motions.
