A long-time researcher on security affairs in Asia at the University of California, San Diego, has urged Japan and China to deepen their dialogue in a concerted effort to mend bilateral relations frayed by a dispute over a group of uninhabited islets in the East China Sea.

Tai Ming Cheung, associate professor at the university and director of its Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, gave his views on how to defuse the island spat in a recent interview with Kyodo News.

The dispute over the Senkaku Islands, effectively controlled by Japan but also claimed by China, is "a clear indicator of the structural transformation between the two countries," Cheung said, pointing out that the territorial row is a result of China's "broader rise in the international system."
