PhD in Political Sciences and International Affairs

Why PhD?
Analytically Trained, Regionally Focused

The PhD in Political Science and International Affairs is a joint program with the UC San Diego Political Science Department.

This program prepares students for careers in university teaching and research, or as international affairs researchers and specialists in policy analysis.

The joint PhD program has a required first-year curriculum offered by the Department of Political Science. This curriculum is a year-long set of courses, three in the "Principles of Politics" and three in "Research Methods.” The principles sequence begins with a survey of basic analytic concepts used throughout the discipline of Political Science and continues with courses on the origins, institutions, and consequences of democracy, and on the relationship between states and markets. The methods courses include research design, econometrics, and game theory. Click here for more information about the PhD program.
