The PhD in Political Science and International Affairs is a joint program with the UC San Diego Political Science Department. The joint PhD program is small and extremely selective. Preference is given to students with prior academic records of distinction and to those who have a background in one of the fields of emphasis.

This program prepares students for careers in university teaching and research, or as international affairs researchers and specialists in policy analysis. Sixteen courses are required to advance to candidacy and combine the analytical skills of political science with the political economy, institutional analysis, policy analysis (especially economic policy), and regional training of IR/PS. A regional focus and language proficiency are required.
