China Specialization

Professors Barry Naughton and Susan Shirk lead the China concentration, and have made significant contributions to our understanding of China’s economic reforms. In addition, Professors Tai Ming Cheung and Mikkal Herberg teach courses related to security and global energy, respectively.

Language

China specialists must satisfy the MPIA language requirement in Mandarin Chinese.  Chinese training at the undergraduate level is available through the UC San Diego Chinese Studies Program.  MPIA students who are currently at the undergraduate level of Chinese ability are strongly encouraged to spend time in China during their summer internship or the Education Abroad Program.  Advanced level Chinese training is available through the Chinese Studies Program and at IR/PS, where it is taught by Yvonne Swun.
