Latin America Specialization
Professors Gordon Hanson, Alberto Díaz-Cayeros, and Richard Feinberg lead the Latin America concentration. All have contributed important works on trade and investment, immigration, constitutional design, comparative political economy, and the development of markets.

Language
Latin America specialists must satisfy the MPIA language requirement in Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese. Brazilian Portuguese is offered by the UC San Diego Linguistics Department. Spanish training at the beginning levels is also offered by the Linguistics Department. Spanish at the intermediate and advanced levels is offered at IR/PS, taught by Victor Zambrano and Sandra Pedregal. Students are encouraged to volunteer in the local San Diego and Baja communities as a means of practicing their language skills. In addition, Career Services can assist with summer internships in Latin countries. Opportunities abroad are also available through the Education Abroad Office.
