Heidi Hermsmeyer, 2007, International Environmental Policy I am doing an internship with Centro Ecological Akumal (CEA), a NGO in Mexico. I usually start my day at the reef, where a group of five interns conduct research on the health and diversity of the coral and fish using transects. After completing our dives, we return to the office to input our data into the database. We are also working on a proposal for a marine protected area in Akumal. My experience here has been great and has opened my eyes to the world of NGOs: funding, what it takes to coordinate volunteers and the local community, and how to bridge the gap between scientific research, conservation, and policy making. Peter Foo, 2007, International Development & Nonprofit Management I am in Manila working under a JICA expert, who is working on pushing forward President Arroyo's 10 point plan, specifically, the Republic Nautical Highway. We are working on improving and modernizing their domestic ships, from small passenger ships to oil tankers. I am creating a database for the domestic shipping division of the Maritime Authority to track their vessels. My other project is a microfinance project to fund small ‘bancas’ (wooden passenger vessels) and help them modernize their boats. Essentially, we work to increase maritime safety. Sean Porter, 2007, Country and Regional Studies, International Development & Nonprofit Management I am at the Nicaraguan Ministry of Economics and things have been hectic. We are formulating national strategies for the next round of WTO negotiations. Most of the work right now revolves around our "Aid for Trade" proposal. We're working with the different ministries and sectoral bodies to compile our official aid requests for said program while reviewing, and issuing responses to the commentaries of various strategic groups of countries. After only three weeks my understanding of international trade structures is much enhanced and the experience has generated insights into the difficulties that developing countries face in their attempts to move forward and deal with endemic poverty. Salary Negotiations - Quick Tips Preparation: find the salary range from the employer. Check salary surveys on the Internet and use your network to ask what the typical salary range is for the position you’re applying for. Determine your needs and wants and know your bottom line . . . and then keep it a secret! Don’t list or discuss salary until you have a job offer . . . use terms like, ‘open’ and ‘negotiable’. Once you have received an offer of employment: don’t stop selling your skills even after the job offer is made. Let them know that you are excited about the position. Paraphrase the offer back to them . . . to ensure that you both have communicated it clearly. Make sure you understand the total compensation package. Receive the final offer in writing before starting your new position.
